Admired for his “deep and resonant” tone (Rochester City Newspaper), bass Michael Galvin is establishing himself as a young singer of notable talent. During the 2023/24 season, Michael makes his debut as the Sorceress in Atlanta Baroque’s production of Dido and Aeneas. He will also be seen in choral engagements with The Thirteen (B Minor Mass) and Boston-based chamber ensemble Nightingale.
Previous operatic engagements include with the Boston Early Music Festival’s productions of Alcina and Circé; Boston Lyric Opera’s productions of La Boheme and Omar; and Iphigenia, a new opera by jazz legends Wayne Shorter and Esperanza Spalding, for a residency at Mass MoCa followed by a world premiere at ArtsEmerson and The Kennedy Center.
Michael currently resides in Boston, Massachusetts. He graduated with his Master of Music in Voice from the Eastman School of Music in May of 2019. He also holds a Bachelor of Music in Voice from Ithaca College, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2017.
At home both in concert as well as on the operatic stage, Michael has appeared as a bass soloist with a number of early music and choral ensembles, notably the Burlington Choral Society, the Eastman Collegium Musicum, and Cornell Early Music Lab
Michael continually seeks to champion the work of Queer creators in Classical Music. Through his drag persona Donatella Fermata, Michael programs operatic cabaret performances and does community engagement to amplify the voices of Queer artists in his field.
